E. & J. Gallo to buy Locations wine brand

DBR Staff Writer Published 29 June 2018

E. & J. Gallo Winery (Gallo) has agreed to acquire the Locations brand, which was founded by Dave Phinney, who will continue in his role as winemaker.

The brand is being acquired from Shooting Gallery Wines, a JV between Phinney and importer Aveníu Brands, a subsidiary of Spain-based Codorníu Raventós Group.

The Locations concept came after a visit by Phinney in 2008 to the Maury appellation in the South of France, where he thought of producing a range of wines that pay homage to a place of origin.

At present, Locations includes wines made by Phinney in collaboration with growers across France, Spain, Italy, Argentina, California, New Zealand, Oregon, Washington, Portugal, Corsica, and Texas.

Financial terms of the transaction, which includes the Locations brand and rated inventory, were not disclosed.

Gallo premium wine division senior vice president and general manager Roger Nabedian said the purchase supports the company’s mission to participate and excel in all segments of the wine market.

“Dave propels innovation to the highest levels by challenging the conventional way of doing things, and removing the barrier of rules in winemaking.”

Phinney added: “I’m excited to continue building upon the momentum of the Locations vision by creating simple, complex and fun wines by removing the constraints of vintage, varietal and appellation to make the best possible wine from a given country or location.”

The portfolio of E. & J. Gallo Winery, which was founded in 1933, is comprised of over 90 brands, including Barefoot Cellars, Dark Horse, and Gallo Family Vineyards, as well as premium box wines The Naked Grape and Vin Vault.

Last month, an affiliate of Gallo has purchased 542 acres of the Sierra Madre property, a vineyard situated near the western edge of the Santa Maria Valley appellation in Santa Barbara County.
