E&J Gallo Winery buys wine brands, winery from Ascentia

DBR Staff Writer Published 05 June 2012

E&J Gallo Winery, a California-based exporter and promoter of wines, has purchased Columbia Winery of Washington and two Covey Run Wine brands from Ascentia Wine Estates of California.

As part of the deal, Gallo has taken over the operations of Columbia winery's two facilities at Woodinville and Sunnyside.

This is the first expansion for Gallo in Washington, following huge demand within the state. The state has 650 wineries and over 36,000 acres of vineyards through which it produces more than 30 varietals of wine.

E&J Gallo Winery premium wine division senior vice president and general manager Roger Nabedian said they have been watching the Washington wine industry grow for a number of years and consider these wine brands to be a key part of their premium wine strategy moving forward.

"This purchase will help us expand our footprint and offer our customers wines from the Columbia Valley and Yakima Valley Appellations," Nabedian said.
